Thrills, Chills, and Kills

Updated: Aug 21

A long weekend led to much movie watching for this tired momma. Usually, I have to flip through a ton of titles before I find something that catches my attention. This weekend, I was pleased to find four movies that didn’t disappoint.

Let’s start with my favorite, Don’t Let Go. I found this movie on Prime listed under Horror. Though, this one felt a bit more like a thriller, to me. It does have a supernatural element to it, which I guess is why they listed it as horror but if you’re looking to be scared, Don’t Let Go isn’t THAT type of movie. But if you’re looking for a gripping supernatural thriller, this one is for you!

The story features a single detective, played by David Oyelowo and his niece, played by Storm Reid. Her dad is into some shady business and the uncle steps up where the dad fails. He even buys her a cell phone so that she can call him whenever she needs.

Tragedy strikes and the girl and her family are murdered. The grief-stricken uncle then receives a call from his niece’s phone that leads him on a wild hunt for the murderer. This case of whodunit is a wild ride of emotions with some unexpected twists that will keep you glued to the edge of your seat. Five out of five stars from me.

Now, let’s get to the real Horror, The Super. I really enjoyed this movie and if you are looking for a true horror film, I got you. Let me just say two words here, Val Kilmer. This dude killed it.

His performance was great, and I was so happy to see him in this role after not seeing him on screen for so long. Then I realized the movie said 2017. Regardless, I was still happy to see Kilmer’s face. He is utterly creepy in this movie and his role as the mysterious super who is into what seems to be some sort of dark magic gave me the willies.

This movie begins with a father of two girls who moves into an apartment building where the tenants keep disappearing. Nobody really knows where they’re going. Some think they’ve moved, but all their things are left behind. The father, an ex-police officer, is hired to work at the building and soon has a run in with the super, Val Kilmer.

Dude rubs daddy the wrong way and things go south from there. The dad is convinced that this super is super bad. So, as many overprotective daddies do, he keeps an eye on him. So much so that he takes it way too far. This is another movie with a great twist that I did not see coming and it is hard to fool me. The only thing that kind of fell flat for me was the chemistry between the love interest in this one. Other than that, I really loved this movie. I give it four out of five stars.

Big Driver was hard to watch but still worth it. As a woman, this one touched a dark place. We’ve all had that feeling of being alone and unsure of our surroundings and the men in them. Big Driver is literally about a BIG driver. This dude is huge.

A writer, played by Maria Bello gets a flat and becomes stranded in the middle of nowhere. Relieved when a man stops to help, played by Will Harris, her hopes soon fade when she realizes that this colossal redneck has more disturbing intentions. I give this one five stars but I do warn that there are some scenes that may be disturbing as this does contain SA.

The Wretched was an interesting take on witchy horror movies. The boy next door vs evil witch who eats the forgotten. This troubled teen comes to visit his father for the summer when he realizes some weird goings on at the neighbor’s house.

He starts to investigate and realizes there is something sinister happening to this family. The neighbor’s son disappears, and his parents seem to be hiding something after claiming that they don’t have a child at all.

This is another movie with a good twist. The tree-dwelling witch in The Wretched is truly terrifying and I give this movie another four out of five stars. You can watch all these movies on Prime.
